The brain uses sensory input from our feet, eyes and inner ear to determine where our body is in space and how to adapt to spatial issues to maintain an upright posture. Additionally, by focusing on where we place our feet we can drastically limit a potential for falling. For instance, many times seniors fall when they catch their toe on a throw rug. Another example includes older adults falling when they miss the last step on a staircase. Often times, aging adults slip and fall on slick surfaces like ice or water. In the home, falls generally occur when the individual trips on clutter like a shoe or newspaper. These falls can be eliminated by watching your step and where you place your foot. As a physical therapist, I instruct my patients how to use specific balance techniques, which include using the sense of touch between our feet and ankles to improve stability.
