Shaun White's High Level Balance Exercises For The Olympics

Balance Exercises Are Essential For Olympians

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.comWinner: White is the two-time defending champion in halfpipe and a medal contender in slopestyle
Practicing balance exercises is a critical part of getting ready for the Winter Games in Sochi for all Olympic athletes, including two time gold medalist in the halfpipe, Shaun White. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now High level balance skills, however, are not enough to keep Shaun White competing in the debut of slopestyle snowboarding event this year.  In the slopestyle event, snowboarders navigate a downhill obstacle course with jumps and rails at unbelievable speeds. Shaun White, a familiar face at the Winter Olympic scene, dreamed of a pursuit of a gold in both slopestyle and his strongest event, the halfpipe. The controversy of the safety slope style course, forced White to withdraw from the event. Riders have complained Russia made the slopestyle course too dangerous.  On Monday, a slopestyle medal favorite, Norway’s Torstein Horgmo, broke his collarbone during practice and was forced to withdraw from the Olympics. The course was modified overnight, but those moves didn’t help much: on Tuesday, White jammed his wrist, and Finnish snowboarder Marika Enne crash landed on the final jump, hitting her head. As a result, White said he wanted to concentrate on the halfpipe. “With the practice runs I have taken, even after course modifications and watching fellow athletes get hurt, the potential risk of injury is a bit too much for me to gamble my other Olympics goals on.”

Balance Exercises Improve Stability

Adding balance exercises to a regular routine of core strengthening and leg strengthening exercises is essential for athletes to compete at high levels like at the Olympics. there are unique individuals in the world like Shaun White who build their own halfpipe venue to practice flips, twists  and jumps, all while riding a snowboard on a hardpacked surface made for speed. For us regular folks, equilibrium routines can help us stay on our feet when we are navigating every day courses like going up and down stairs, turning in the kitchen or navigating in a small bathroom. For both snowboard competitors and older adults who want to stay safe at home, one key to avoiding an injury producing fall is to practice controlling shifting ones body weight during all movement activities. you can learn the specifics of weight shifting techniques, stability strategies and which balance exercises to perform by following the direction of an experienced physical therapist in the exercise for balance dvd.
