Balance Exercises For Foot Drop

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance DVD via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Balance exercises are essential for individuals who have foot drop to perform on a daily basis. Foot drop, which can often be called drop foot, is a general term for difficulty lifting the front part of the foot, especially from the ball of the foot to the toes.  The muscle involved in foot drop that specifically is weak is found along the front side of the shin bone.  If you have foot drop, you may drag the front of your foot on the ground when you walk. Additionally, the condition of foot drop significantly decreases balance abilities and heightens the risk for falling.  Foot drop is not a specific disease. Instead, foot drop is a sign of an underlying neurological, muscular or anatomical problem. Sometimes foot drop is temporary and can resolve with exercises or time. In other cases, foot drop is permanent, especially if nerve damage is a component of the problem. If you have foot drop, you may need to wear a brace on your ankle and foot to hold your foot in a normal position.  Furthermore, with foot drop you will want to practice balance exercises to limit additional injuries from falling.  Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now

Balance Exercises For Foot Drop

Balance exercises are important to practice every day with it you have a temporary or permanent case of foot drop.  Individuals who perform specific balance training will learn to control their weight shifting, thereby reducing the risk of falling. Stability exercises can also help to enhance balance reactions at the feet and ankles which help with balance abilities.  Balance training can also help the person compensate for the weakness in their leg and ankle by maximizing sensory feedback from the feet and ankles to help improve stability.  Additionally, folks with foot drop would benefit from strengthening exercises of anterior leg muscles to minimize dragging their toes with walking, which could easily result in a fall.
