Senior Balance Exercises Prevent Falls

Having a pet can pose both risks and benefits, but performing regular senior balance exercises can help improve balance and minimize the risk of falling. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Medical research has shown that owning a pet like a dog or a cat has numerous health benefits including reducing stress, blood pressure, and cortisol levels. Pet ownership can also encourage physical activity, such as taking your dog for a walk. For many senior citizens, being alone and/or living alone (especially during the holiday season), can create a tremendous amount of loneliness, stress, anxiety and depression. Living alone can also lead to reduced physical activity, which promotes generalized weakness and deconditioning. Overall weakness can then also lead to an increased risk of falling. When an elder’s thoughts are preoccupied by emotional problems, they may not be as mentally alert in recognizing a hazardous environmental condition (such as throw rugs, slippery floors, a loose stairway handrail, etc.) or an unsafe activity (not using a cane when walking, not holding onto a grab bar when entering the shower, etc.).  Several medical reports have suggested that an older individual’s health can benefit from having a pet, which could potentially reduce their risk of falling as well. On the other hand, the CDC (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) reported that that there are some circumstances where pet ownership can increase risk of falls to those who live with them.  The circumstances associated with pet-related falls include:
-Slipping or tripping while dog walking
-Losing balance while trying to step over a dog
-Being pulled over (loss of balance) while walking their dog on a leash
-Being knocked over by a dog
-Tripping or falling over a dog or cat
-Falling while chasing a dog or cat
-Tripping over dog and cat related items (such as a toy, food bowl, etc.)
Consequently, it is imperative for pet owners to practice senior balance exercises to limit any potential of a fall.

Senior Balance Exercises For Pet Owners

rehearsing senior balance exercises is essential for the safety of all pet owners. One of the first equilibrium routines to start involves standing on one foot and moving the other foot forwards and backwards. This stability routine will improve steadiness as you advance your ability to control how your body weight shifts with movement. You can progress this stability exercise by standing on one foot and stepping over objects to control your steadiness as if you were stepping over a dog or a dog toy. You can learn these equilibrium routines and a series of step by step senior balance exercises by following along with the direction of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.
