Happy New Year From Exercise For Balance

Have A Happy New Year With Balance Exercises

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com
Make practicing balance exercises part of your new year's resolution. Balance exercises can help us all start the New Year on good footing.  As we look around at the financial, political, social and medical struggles that surround us and our families, community and nation, we realize that there are few things we can control in our lives.  Thankfully, by practicing stability exercises on a daily basis we have a better opportunity to eliminate falls and any resulting injuries from falling. Each year, millions of adults aged 65 and older fall.1 Falls can cause moderate to severe injuries, such as hip fractures and head traumas, and can increase the risk of early death. Fortunately, falls are a public health problem that is largely preventable. Practicing equilibrium exercises helps to give us a peace of mind that our efforts will have a beneficial effect that can lead to positive results in our lives.  Medical researchers have proven over and over again that performing a balance exercise routine on a daily basis both improves balance abilities and limits the risk of falling.  Please see http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-

Balance Exercises In The New Year

A daily dose of balance exercises can help you stay steady and active throughout the New Year. Medical statistics reveal that :
  • One out of three older adults (those aged 65 or older) falls each year but less than half talk to their healthcare providers about it.
  • Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries.
  • In 2013, 2.5 million nonfatal falls among older adults were treated in emergency departments and more than 734,000 of these patients were hospitalized.
  • In 2012, the direct medical costs of falls, adjusted for inflation, were $30 billion.
  • Twenty to thirty percent of people who fall suffer moderate to severe injuries such as lacerations, hip fractures, and head traumas.  These injuries can make it hard to get around or live independently, and increase the risk of early death.
  • Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries (TBI).
  • In 2000, 46% of fatal falls among older adults were due to TBI.
  • Most fractures among older adults are caused by falls. The most common are fractures of the spine, hip, forearm, leg, ankle, pelvis, upper arm, and hand.
  • Many people who fall, even if they are not injured, develop a fear of falling. This fear may cause them to limit their activities, which leads to reduced mobility and loss of physical fitness, and in turn increases their actual risk of falling.
  •    The best way to eliminate falling is to perform steadiness exercises every day.                                                                                                                                                                                                                   You can start the New Year with specific balance training and balance exercises through the Exercise For Balance DVD, developed by a knowledgeable Physical Therapist. The balance DVD will guide you through specific stability training techniques that will strengthen the connection between your brain and body, which will enhance your balance reactions at your feet and ankles. The DVD includes specific information that will help you be nimble and stay steady on various surfaces, like walking on ice, snow, rugged hiking trails, and uneven sand at the beach. Balance exercises are the perfect foundation to build stability for adding additional cardiovascular and strengthening exercises at the gym. Adding equilibrium exercises to your gym workout can also maximize your core strengthening abilities and burn additional calories.
