Balance Exercises To Prevent Falls In The Kitchen

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/
Balance exercises are a key component to preventing falls in the home, especially in the kitchen. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Statistics reveal that one in three seniors fall every year. Some of those falls occur while going downstairs. Some falls happen secondary to tripping over a pair of shoes or a book in the den. Many of those falls take place in the kitchen due to tripping on a throw rug at the sink, slipping on a wet tile or hardwood floor surface or turning quickly from the counter to the stove and becoming dizzy, thereby losing ones balance.

Balance Exercises To Reduce The Risk Of Falling In The Kitchen.

Balance exercises are essential to help prevent falls and the injuries that occur from falling in the kitchen. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently doing a study on preventing falls in the kitchen environment. The purpose of this research project is to evaluate the efficacy of slip, trip, and fall (STF) prevention practices in the food services industry. NIOSH hopes to research the effectiveness of fall prevention in large food service industry settings and contribute ideas that can relate to the home environment for seniors. According to the study, "It is anticipated that this research would impact worker safety by providing scientific evidence and business case support for a comprehensive STF prevention program to effectively reduce STF injuries among food service workers.  By demonstrating the effectiveness of STF prevention measures, it is anticipated that food service companies initially hesitant to expend time and money on prevention programs with unknown effectiveness could use these research findings to help justify implementing prevention strategies." In the meantime, older adults can practice balance techniques and equilibrium exercises to improve their stability and diminish their risk of falling in the kitchen. One step is to remove throw rugs near the sink, to reduce the potential for tripping. Additionally, seniors can be vigilant to monitor their floors for any moisture that might increase slips on a wet surface. Furthermore, aging adults can practice specific balance exercises and balance techniques with the Exercise For Balance DVD at home and on a daily basis.
