Safe Balance Exercises For Parkinson's Patients

By Suzanne Stoke, Physical Therapist @ Exercise For Balance via www.exerciseforbalance.com/
Balance exercises are an important component of daily activities for those folks who have Parkinson's. Please see  http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now In general, Parkinson's disease occurs secondary to a breakdown in the communication between the brain and the body. To be more specific, the neurotransmitter, Dopamine, is manufactured in a deep region of the brain called the substantia nigra. The job of Dopamine is to stimulate the cells in the basal ganglia area of the brain that ultimately controls movement. In individuals with Parkinson's Disease, the cells in the substantia nigra unexpectantaly and prematurely die, resulting in a reduction of available Dopamine. Parkinsonism is the official name for the collection of common symptoms that include tremor, stiffness, forward bent posturing, slowness of movement, unsteady gait and balance problems.  As a result, people with Parkinson's suffer from movement disorders including difficulties with
-rising from a chair
-walking
-climbing stairs
-activities of daily living
Because of the familiar symptoms of Parkinson's, balance exercises are critical to perform on a daily basis.

Balance Exercises To Improve Safety

Balance exercises should be practiced on a daily basis for those folks with Parkinson's Disease. Since a fall can lead to fractures and head injuries, falling is one of the most dangerous complications of Parkinson's Disease. to improve safety,  individuals with Parkinson's Disease should be educated on the risks of falling as well as specific techniques for getting up from a chair, walking, and stair climbing. Patients with Parkinson's should also be informed that a common side effect of Levodopa, the medication usually prescribed to those with Parkinson's Disease, is dizziness upon rising, secondary to the drop in blood pressure. Specific balance strategies can include getting up from a chair and taking a minute to center their balance, allowing the dizziness to subside. These balance techniques and other stability exercises can be practiced in the comfort of your own home with the Exercise For Balance DVD.
