To maintain good stability with brisk walking, health professionals recommend starting a program of  senior balance exercises. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now Recently a study was published by scientists at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. The study's title was Senior Citizens Who Walk Slowly Can Expect Dementia to Catch Up with Them. The researchers presented the idea that if you are a senior citizen and you walk very slowly, you have some things to worry about. The researchers published a report from a study of 27,000 seniors age 60 or older that declares it can predict dementia in the future of those who walk slowly and have cognitive complaints. Another study early this year says slow walking seniors are less happy and have shorter longevity. In fact, a study of seniors in 2011 says how fast they walk is a better gage of how long they will live than trying to do a more complicated analysis of their medical condition and history. The new study involving older adults on five continents found that nearly 1 in 10 met criteria for pre-dementia based on a simple test that measures how fast people walk and whether they have cognitive complaints. People who tested positive for pre-dementia were twice as likely as others to develop dementia within 12 years. The new test diagnoses motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR). Testing for the newly described syndrome relies on measuring gait speed (our manner of walking) and asking a few simple questions about a patient's cognitive abilities, both of which take just seconds.  With a quick screen now available, medical practitioners are able to recommend appropriate treatments including starting a series of senior balance exercises to improve steadiness and facilitate enhanced walking abilities.

Senior Balance Exercises For Brisk Walking

A daily dose of senior balance exercises can help enhance stability to assist older individuals in starting a healthy walking program. Medical researchers have found that cardiovascular exercise like brisk walking improves memory and overall brain function by increasing the blood flow and nutrition to the brain. Before stepping out on a walking program, however, it is wise to initiate a series of equilibrium exercises to establish adequate stability for walking on all kinds of terrain. As an example, you can start indoors walking down a hall way in a tandem walking fashion. Tandem walking involves walking a long a line touching the heel and toe together. Tandem walking routines can help develop strong balance reactions at the ankles, preparing you for brisk walking on outdoor terrain. You can learn tandem walking and other senior balance exercises by following along with the direction of a knowledgeable Physical Therapist in the exercise for balance DVD.
