Balance Exercises Help After Orthopedic Surgeries

Balance Exercises For Post Surgery

Balance exercises are beneficial for any person who undergoes an orthopedic surgery such as a hip replacement, knee replacement, ankle reconstruction, ACL Repair, or any foot surgery. Please see   http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now There are several foot surgeries available for individuals who suffer with bunions. Bunions form when the big toe joint becomes misaligned. The improper alignment results in an enlargement of the bone or surrounding tissue. Outwardly, the enlargement looks like a bump at the side of the big toe joint. Over time as a bunion develops, the bone in the big toe begins to drift inwards, often pushing on the other nearby toes. Usually, orthopedic surgeons measure the alignment of the bone in the big toe to determine which surgical procedure is necessary to alleviate the problem. Surgeons have at their disposal several types of surgeries to fix bunion issues. The most common surgical procedure to correct the misalignment of the big toes is called an osteotomy. during this type of surgery, the bone is cut at the front, middle or back depending on the angulation of the toe. Usually with an osteotomy a section of bone is cut out, the bone is realigned and a device such as a screw is inserted to hold the bone in place. Another type of procedure that is available, if there is no remarkable angular deformity, is called an exostectomy, which is a removing of the bump on the toe by shaving or thinning with a surgical saw. The most invasive surgical procedure involves a joint fusion and is called a lapidus bunionectomy.  In this surgery the toe bone (metatarsal) is fused with the bone next to it (cuneiform). This surgery is more involved because the person loses the mobility of the joint between the two bones. As you can see, with all foot surgeries there is quite a lot that is involved and appropriate balance exercises are needed to restore function afterwards.

Balance Exercises Following A Bunionectomy

Balance exercises are critical to perform after a bunionectomy. Most bunion surgeries take at least 12 weeks of recovery. The aftercare includes spending time on crutches, using a walking boot or surgical shoe, and starting mobility and balance exercises when the time is right. After surgery, a person can expect their foot to be painful, stiff and swollen. Rehabilitation is essential for the best outcome of the surgery. In Physical Therapy, we start the patient on easy mobility exercises, massage and gentle movements of the ankle, midfoot and toes. Additionally, we begin balance training immediately to try to regain the sensory feedback through the foot which is critical for balance. For  more information on which specific balance exercises to perform, see the Exercise For Balance DVD.
