Senior Balance Exercises And Brain Health

Medical scientists are continuing to find key components to brain health including good nutrition and physical fitness that includes senior balance exercises. Please see more information at     http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  Retaining both short term and long term memory is necessary for adequate function of daily activities as well as a key factor to quality of life for older adults. because of such great importance, memory has been heavily studied by medical researchers. To be specific,  in a study published online in Neuron, Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT in collaboration with an international team of scientists looked at the activity of new and old brain cells and how they relate to memory. The researchers found that as the human brain matures, the connections between older neurons become stronger, more numerous, and more intertwined, making integration for the newly formed neurons more difficult. Neural stem cells become less productive, leading to a decline in neurogenesis. With fewer new neurons to help sort memories, the aging brain can become less efficient at keeping separate and faithfully retrieving memories. In order to keep two similar memories separate, the hippocampus (part of the brain involved in memory) activates two different populations of neurons to encode each memory in a process called pattern separation. When there is overlap between these two populations, researchers believe it is more difficult for an individual to distinguish between two similar memories formed in two different contexts, to discriminate between a Sunday afternoon stroll through the woods from a patrol through enemy territory in a forest, for example. If the memories are encoded in overlapping populations of neurons, the hippocampus may inappropriately retrieve either. If the memories are encoded in non-overlapping populations of neurons, the hippocampus stores them separately and retrieves them only when appropriate. The researchers findings help us to understand that memory is a very complex activity and requires optimal brain health. Medical researchers as well as healthcare professionals agree that brain health can be boosted by practicing certain lifestyle choices including eating well, staying active and avoiding falls and blows to the head by practicing senior balance exercises on a regular basis.

Senior Balance Exercises For Brain Health

Older individuals can enhance their stability and minimize the potential of a fall and head injury by performing specific senior balance exercises every day. As an example, those in the aging population can practice equilibrium routines that involve standing on one foot for twenty seconds three repetitions on each foot. This single leg standing routine can be progressed by standing on one foot and adding moving the other foot forward and backwards or side to side. By swinging the other foot in different directions, you challenge your steadiness to include both static and dynamic balance skills. You can practice these senior balance exercises in the comfort of your own home by following the instructions  and demonstration of a knowledgeable physical therapist in the exercise for balance DVD.
