Familiar Senior Balance Exercises

Knowing which senior balance exercises  to practice and how to perform them is the first step towards improving stability and reducing falls in older adults. Please see more information at http://www.exerciseforbalance.com/buy-now  Many of us are familiar with the concept that as we age we lose muscle mass and strength in our leg muscles, we become stiffer at the ankles and less able to adapt to various ground surfaces and we experience a decline in our balance systems, leading to a greater incidence of falling. In fact, medical researchers suggest that one in three adults in the aging population (over sixty years old) will fall each year. Often those falls result in debilitating injuries like wrist and hip fractures or head injuries. With that in mind, healthcare providers like doctors, physician assistants and physical therapists recommend that aging individuals perform at least three basic senior balance exercises.

Which Senior Balance Exercises To Do

There are three basic senior balance exercises that older adults can do on a regular basis to increase stability and reduce the risk of falling. Those equilibrium routines include:
1) Single Leg Standing- In single leg standing, the senior citizen stands on one leg ( near a counter or table) for about twenty seconds, repeating that routine on each leg three times.
2) Tandem standing- In tandem standing, the older person stands with their feet in a line, in a heel to toe position. Hold that tandem stance position for twenty seconds and do three repetitions in each direction.
3) Tandem walking- With tandem walking, the aging individual walks along a line, in a heel to toe fashion for about ten feet and five repetitions.
You can learn how to perform these and other senior balance exercises to do in the comfort of your own home by following along with the instructions from a qualified Physical Therapist in the Exercise For Balance DVD.
